Get to Know
Our Cattle
For 2 years we worked on the logistics of purchasing and transporting Devons to South Dakota, as most all the Devons are located on the east coast, in the New England states. Not only the 2,000 plus miles but also the climate the cattle were coming out of played a part in getting Devons to our ranch. South Dakota has very harsh, cold winters (below 0 degrees) and a lot of wind, putting the windchill temps to -30 to -40 degrees below zero. Our cattle live like the ancient cattle the Devons are descended from. They live year round out on range pastures and during the winter are kept in the rough breaks and tree lined creek bottoms. The Devons we were looking for needed to come from the same type of climate as ours so they were already genetically conditioned to grow a lot of hair in the winter and be able to withstand the cold.

In 2016 we purchased 3 Devon cows, 2 calves and 2 yearling heifers from Rolland Johnson of Three Eagles Ranch in Colorado.

Cows
We currently have 22 breeding females, ages 8 years down to 1 year old. This spring we had 13 Devon calves born, 6 bull calves and 7 heifer calves.

2021 was the first year we felt we had our numbers built up to where we could start selling females. One of our cow's with calf at side went to Helena, Montana to become a family homestead milk cow.
This fall when we pregnancy test, we will be pulling tail hairs on all the cows to send in for the A2/A2 test.
Bulls
Our 2 herd bulls for the cows are Golden Crest Farm's JJ (6 yr) and Landeau's William Bradford (4 yr). Landeau's Dixon and Landeau's Lundy (3 yr) are with the yearling heifers. We also have two (2 yr) bulls and a 1 year old bull that are for sale.

We have had the bulls DNA tested for A2/A2 Beta casein and are waiting for results on them.

We let our bull calves stay bulls for a full year to see how they develop. If they are not bull material, we will castrate them and butcher them as 2 yr old steers

Butcher Beef
This fall we will have 3- 2 yr old steers going to butcher. They are half Devon. We sell by the hanging weight whole, halves or quarters.
